Make your photobooth a hit with these great-looking vibrant foam signs. Designed to be on trend, more durable and better looking than cardboard and foam-core, these signs will allow your guests to express themselves with often comedic results.
So you have an event coming up and you are excited that the main attraction is going to be the photobooth. You look forward to seeing all you guests making goofy faces and using different props to tell a story. However, not all photobooth companies are the same and unlike the Punch Monkey Photobooth that comes with over a hundred quality costumes, props and accessories, you realize that you are going to have to pull out your craft supplies and create some DIY props.
In this DIY project we are going to create custom foam signs that not only enhance your photobooth experience but look great, are quick to make, and are easy on your wallet.
Time: 1 hr
Total Cost: $7 - $20
Tools: Scissors, Scalpel and Spray adhesive (all optional)
Item to buy: 2 containers of self-adhesive foam letters & numbers
Item to buy: 1 pack of 50 foam sheets
I decided to buy 2 containers of letters so that it wouldn’t be so hard to find the letters that I needed. As it turns out the whole process of looking for the specific letter and colour felt a bit like doing a puzzle. I ended up starting to sort the letters into piles – “A”s with “A”s and “B”s with “B”s, etc. However, I only got about a quarter of the way through the sorting before I decided that it would probably be enough for the project. It did mean that near the end I would spend about 10 minutes looking for a yellow E, thinking to myself that if I would have sorted all the letters I would not be spending all this time looking for a stupid yellow E.
Once you have all your letters ready to go, you now need to think of words to write on your signs. This may be one of the hardest parts of this project. I found it useful to think of current memes, song lyrics and funny expressions. Other sources of inspiration may come from movies, books or your own event theme. For example, if your event is a wedding you may want signs that say ‘Mr. & Mrs.’ or ‘I was the bride’s second choice’.
Try to choose coloured letters that provide good contrast with the foam sheet so that they show up well in your photobooth photos.
Great, you have come up with some sayings that you want to turn into signs. It is important to lay the letters out before you peel the backs off exposing the adhesive. This will allow you to make sure that you have all the letters in the colour that you want and that all your letters will fit onto the foam sheet. This will also allow you to position the letters in an appealing way as in the examples in the above picture.
Once you have stuck all your letters down, you may want to add some shapes or symbols to embellish your signs, such as using hashtags (i.e., #), stars or hearts. For the embellishments, just draw straight onto one of your foam sheets. Once you are happy with your design, cut it out using scissors or a scalpel. As the foam sheets do not have adhesive backings, you will need to take them outside and apply a light coat of spray adhesive. Remember to spray the same side that you drew on, this way you will not see your lines once it is stuck down.
Have fun with this DIY project and let me know what words or expressions you come up with. Also remember that if you don’t have the time to create these beautiful signs, but you would like them at your event, you can either rent the Punch Monkey Photobooth or buy them from my Etsy store.
